Venture capitalist Esther Dyson

says one of the good things about the Internet is how it distributes power away from central authorities and gives it to individuals. She calls the Internet "a tool for people to control their own lives." However, since it gives power to good and bad alike, we must accept responsibility for what happens online.

Dyson says she's doing her part to make the Internet a good place to be. She compares the message in her latest book Release 2.0 to her work in Russia. It's not clear, she says, if things are going to work out for the better in Russia. "But I'm there trying to make it better."

During a recent book tour, Paul Schindler caught a ride with Dyson for a backseat interview between appointments.

Optimistic statement about the Internet
It is a tool for people to use to control their own lives. It reduces the power of central authorities and gives it to individuals, not to control others, but to control themselves. That's optimistic. It is true, but it is a challenge to people to make use of it."

Pessimistic statement about the Internet
"There's a lot of people who just won't take advantage of it. It's just more television. People won't rise to the challenge. They'll be passive. That's certainly true of a number of people, but I'm trying to reduce the number."
