Tim O'Reilly

has made his fortune documenting Unix and open source software. His O'Reilly & Associates publishing house is a prime example of how someone can make a business of free software.

O'Reilly says the creators of some of the most successful programs and languages in their niches, from Perl to Bind to Fetchmail, have all been too modest to speak out about their success. He wants to change that. Recently, he has been working with Perl creator Larry Wall to promote the favorite programming language of Web developers with a conference, books, and a resource kit.

Now he's expanded that program to embrace a host of free software developers, taking his act on the road to tout the merits of open source development. David Sims talked to O'Reilly recently about open source software.
